2010 Coin Market Highlights

Posted on December 17, 2010 by

It’s been an exciting year for Numismatics. On November 09, 2010 Gold hit over $1420 an ounce breaking an all time high. And on December 07, 2010, Silver hit $30 an ounce. The highest it’s been since 1980.

This year the Mint also sold over 32 million – 2010 Uncirculated Silver Eagles, (the highest for any other year).

In May, a 1794 Silver Dollar broke the record for the highest price ever paid for a coin when it sold for 7.8 million dollars. Then, we had the unique 1943- D Copper Cent sell for 1.7 million dollars, also breaking several price records.

The introduction of Plus (+) Grading into the market for coins that are very nice for the grade. The announcement of the Coin Sniffer which detects doctored coins. The introduction of the 2010 – 5 oz. 2010 America the Beautiful Quarters, which are also the largest coins that have ever struck by the U.S. Mint.

There are definitely many other great events that took place in the coin market this year that I did not mention. If you have a particular highlight that I left out or agree with any of the ones already mentioned, let us know. To post, go to “COMMENTS” above this post.

I’m really surprised at the strength of the Gold Buffalo coins. The very best are really hard to find! That is great if you have filled your series, however while still trying to fill mine, I’ve run into a couple of next to impossibles.

The largest event was the realization that all currencies
are FIAT and most governments central banks are racing to the bottom to cut their currencies values to maintain or improve exports. This has directly translated to the increased general ownership of anything “rea” and not fiatl including coins, stamps, bullion metals, nonbullion metals as the general populace is now getting bombarded with daily mass news coverage which, in turn, drives them into the coin shows, metals houses, etal. to buy anything real whether it is bullion or rare coins, rare or real anything.

  3. Hi Paul,

If you look at the PCGS Price Guide’s Biggest Gainers, the Gold Buffalo’s are some of the best performers. For example, the 2008 Fractional Buffalo’s have already increased over 250% in the past year.

    Thanks, jaime
